Darwin Leon’s powerful surreal paintings use the human figure to explore current and historical aspects of humanity.

Darwin Leon's work is energetic, fresh, and abundant with color. He reinvents classic techniques of renaissance masters and combines them with a surrealistic perspective to create a contemporary approach he calls Expressionistic Surrealism. His painting show imaginative figures and landscapes through which he explores the individual, social, and political issues of our time, always with a slight tongue in cheek, “so that people can grasp the meaning without feeling too challenged by the message.”

Born in Havana, Cuba, Darwin Leon moved with his family to Spain to escape Cuba’s political and economic crisis, and then later to Miami. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Miami International University of Art & Design. During his studies he first focused on religious portraits, but later became fascinated with figurative and expressionistic forms, into which he incorporated satire and irony through surrealism and cubism.

Recently Darwin Leon taught drawing, painting, and anatomy at the South Florida Arts Center, in Miami Beach. Currently he teaches "The Dynamic Human Figure, Drawing and Painting" at the Manatee ArtCenter in Bradenton and painting & drawing at the Carrollwood Cultural Center. He lives in Bradenton with his wife and two children. His work can be seen at www.darwinleon.comOpens in new window
